A graveside service for Earl J. Smalling, 88, of Mountain Home will be 3 p.m. today at Baxter Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jim Brooks officiating. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. today at Kirby-Boaz Funeral Home. Mr. Smalling died Monday, Oct. 13, 2003, at his residence.

Earl J. Smalling was born July 18, 1915, at Tamms, Ill., the son of Lewis and Oda Phelps Smalling. He married Verneal Blevins July 20, 1937, at Carruthersville, Mo. He was a general contractor in the construction business. Mr. Smalling moved to Mountain Home from Belleville, Ill., in May 1980. He was a member of Elk's Lodge 1714 and Moose Lodge 1953. He was a baseball pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1930s.

He is survived by his wife, Verneal of Mountain Home; two sisters, Celeste O'Neill and Christina Smalling, both of Belleville; and nine nieces and nephews, Jo Ann Knollman of Battle Ground, Wash., Jerry Smalling, Jan O'Neill and Scott O'Neill, all of Belleville, Dennis Smalling of St. Louis, Tim Smalling of O'Fallon, Ill., Patricia Smalling of Patton, Calif., Sandra Jones of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Jeff O'Neill of Lakeland, Fla. Mr. Smalling was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
