George J. Pastove, Jr., age 68, of Mountain Home, Arkansas, died Sunday, January 10, 2010, at Baxter Regional Medical Center.
He was born July 21, 1941, in Hammond, Indiana, to George J. Pastove, Sr., and Angeline Gortat Pastove. On October 5, 1985, he married Theresa Jancik in Hammond, Indiana. Mr. Pastove served for six years in the U.S. Navy and retired from the U.S. Coast Guard with ten years of service. He served for 30 years in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. Mr. Pastove served in Operation Desert Shield. He also retired from the LTV Steel Corporation, having worked in Chemical Analysis. He moved to Mountain Home December 31, 1996 from Hammond, Indiana.
George lived his life in the service of others. A devout Catholic, he was a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, devoting many hours to Eucharistic Adoration, and was a religious education teacher and youth leader. He was one of the original bus drivers taking the homebound to Saturday Evening Mass. A member and Past Grand Knight of the Fisherman Council Knights of Columbus #7353, he was also a Fourth Degree Knight in the Father Henry J. Chinery Assembly #2060, and had served as trustee in both the Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was very active in the annual Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll drive, represented the Knights as a Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army, was an active worker for the Mountain Home Food Basket collecting food after weekend Masses at St. Peter’s, and helped with Knights of Columbus brat sales outside Harp’s Grocery. Mr. Pastove served as a mentor at the Alternative School, and he received the Chamber of Commerce Opal Award in November 2008 for the private sector.
A leader in veterans’ affairs, Mr. Pastove was a member of the Alley-White American Legion Post #52; Ozark V.F.W. Post #3246; Twin Lakes D.A.V. Chapter #30; the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla #57, was President of the North Central Arkansas Veterans Council, had served as an honor guard member, and had served for many years as the Veterans Service Officer. For many years, he was a coordinator and driver of the van taking veterans to Little Rock. He also taught boating safety classes.
Survivors are his wife: Theresa Pastove: of the home; two sisters: Pearl (Randal) Niehaus: Dexter, Missouri; Nancy (David) Schiesser: Crown Point, Indiana; and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from Noon-9:00 P.M. Friday at Roller Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6-8:00 P.M. A Vigil Service will be at 7:00 P.M. Friday in the Roller Chapel with Reverend Stan Swiderski officiating. The Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 A.M. Saturday in St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church with Reverend James Fanrak and Reverend Stan Swiderski as celebrants. Pallbearers will be Thomas Elder, George Knox, Dennis McKamey, Brian Schwartz, George Murphy and Michael DeGroot. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum of Love in Baxter Memorial Gardens with military graveside honors by the U.S. Coast Guard, Arkansas Army National Guard, Ozark V.F.W. Post #3246 and Alley-White American Legion Post #52 officiating. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
