*obituary
Calico Rock Progress, Calico Rock, Arkansas, April 19, 1929:

Death Comes to Thos. J. Ashley at Violet Hill.

Mr. Thos. J. Ashley, one of the county’s oldest and best known citizens, passed away at his home at Violet Hill last Tuesday morning, April 16th. His death was not unexpected, as he had been in declining health for several months and of late he has been in a very critical condition.

Mr. Ashley would have been 80 years of age the 22nd of this month. He was born in Kentucky, but moved to this county during childhood, his parents settling in the vicinity of Violet Hill. He has resided there since, within a mile of where he lived when he first came here. Besides being one of the most prosperous farmers of the county, he took an active interest in public affairs until late years when his health became impaired. He took the lead in various moves and enterprises instituted for the betterment of his home community and county. Being of a keen intellect and well posted on affairs in general, his advice was sought by many. He was a man of outstanding integrity and character and enjoyed the highest respect and esteem of all with whom he came in contact.

Mr. Ashley served as justice of the peace of his home township for about 30 years. In 1900 he was elected as county judge, in which capacity he served four years. Later he served the county for two years as representative in the state legislature.

Mr, Ashley’s wife died four years ago. He is survived by three sons and three daughters--John C. Ashley of Melbourne Circuit Judge of this district; Roger Ashley of Pine Bluff; Wm. Ashley of Tuckerman; Mrs. Dr. Smith of Violet Hill; Mrs. C. R. Jacobs of Oklahoma City, and Mrs. Alfred Johnson of Newport.

Burial took place at the Violet Hill cemetery Wednesday afternoon, funeral services being conducted by Rev. W. W. Peterson of Melbourne.
