Simmie Osburn Walker of Brockwell, son of the late Fred Garland and Grace Palestine McMurtrey Walker, was born at Roby, Texas, on June 11, 1914. He died on May 26, 2002, in Brockwell. He was 87 years old.
Mr. Walker was united in marriage to Helen Marie Taylor Blevins at Melbourne on August 1, 1959. To this union three sons were born.
Mr. Walker was a long time Brockwell business man, owning and operating Walker's Grocery and Dry Goods store in Brockwell for 45 years from 1947 until he and his wife retired in 1972. The business continues today after 55 years in operation. He was previously a farmer and was a cattle farmer most of his life. He was a member of the National Youth Administration (NYA) during the Great Depression in the 1930's, helping construct the present Izard County Courthouse in Melbourne. He was a past member of the Oxford School Board serving 12 years. He was a member of the Church of Christ since 1931 and a long time member of the Oxford Church of Christ where he served as an Elder from 1983 until 2001. He was previously a member of the Chapel Hill Church of Christ near Brockwell during its existence. He moved to the Walker family farm near Brockwell from West Texas with his father, step-mother and siblings on a train to Guion in 1922 after they decided to move back to their Izard County roots.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Taylor Walker of the home; four sons, Fred Garland Walker of Brockwell; John Osburn Walker of Melbourne; Michael Noil Walker of Spring Hill, Kansas; and Arvis Richard Blevins of Pleasant Plains; one daughter, Linda Darlene Blevins Edwards of Oxford; one sister, Eutha Dee Walker Burfield of Moline, Illinois; 12 grandchildren, Steven Walker, Ryan Walker, Andrew Walker, Scott Walker, Brooke Walker, Wesley Walker, Joshua Blevins, Susanna Blevins-Epperson, Shelia Youngman, Matthew Coffman, Jessica Edward, and Jason Edwards; and three great-grandchildren, Haley Youngman, Taylor Blevins, and Kyler Epperson.
Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother, Oma Jane Gray Walker; three brothers, Verl Sherman Walker, Olen Basil Walker, and Noil Tensley Walker; two sisters, Virgie Oneta Walker Felver and Oleva Walker Peebles.
Funeral services were May 29, 2002, at the Oxford Church of Christ with Tom Harris and Virgil Ferrell officiating. Pallbearers were Paul Garland, Kenneth Warden, Max Williams, Alan Sherrell, Mike McCandlis, and Russell Sherrell. Honoraray pallbearers were Virgil Sherrell, Darrrell Sherrell, and Herbert Everett.
Interment was at the Violet Hill Cemetery under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Melbourne.
