COWLING, Dan C. - Dan Cowling died at Waldron last Thursday morning at two o'clock without ever regaining consciousness. The story of the accident, by which he lost his life, was told in a Ft. Smith dispatch, as follows: Fort Smith, March 15.- This morning a coach on the Arkansas Western Railroad, which had been cut out at Harris switch while some switching was being done, ran down an incline and struck a train on the main line with a terrific force. The coach contained about a dozen passengers. D.C. Cowling, who was making a trial trip for the Armour Packing Co., was thrown against a stove with such force that he was rendered unconscious and a message to Manager Nield reports him as having died. John D. Priess of Wester received serious, though not necessarily fatal, injuries. The force of impact was such that several boxcars were knocked from the track. The balance of the passengers were badly shaken up and more or less injured. Cowling was 31 years of age and resided at Rogers. He leaves a wife and one child. ***** The Masonic order at Waldron cared for Mr. Cowling until his death and then sent the body to Ft. Smith. It arrived in Rogers Thursday night on the Cannon Ball. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at three o'clock at the C.P. church, of which the deceased had long been a prominent member, and were conducted by Rev. Duggins. The Masons and the Woodmen of the World formed at their lodge rooms and marched to the residence in a body, accompanied by members of the K.P. and A.O.U.W. Just as they reached the house a heavy rain commenced to fall which continued so long that it was found necessary to postpone the interment until Saturday afternoon at two o'clock. The services at the cemetery Saturday were conducted by the Masons. No death that has occurred in Rogers in recent years has been more lamented by our citizens than that of Mr. Cowling, who has long been one of our most prominent young men. He came to Rogers fourteen years ago from Center Point, this state, with F.Z. Meeks for whom he clerked for many years. Later he entered the dry goods store of Geo. D. Parks, with whom he remained until poor health caused him to retire about a year ago. His health had been very poor for a number of years and friends had advised him to go on the road for the benefit of the out door work. He was married in June 1902 to Miss Minnie Roberts of this city and they had one child, a son. We understand that Mr. Cowling carried $2,500 insurance; $2,000 in the Workmen and $500 in the Woodmen.

{from The Rogers Journal} Captain W.C. Roberts and Mrs. Dan C. Cowling returned from Ft. Smith Saturday night. While there they adjusted her claim against the Kansas City and Southern Railroad Co. in the accident resulting in killing her husband on the 16th day of last March. The company paid her the sum of $5,350. This sum, with the insurance carried by him will make the total received by her $8,850. While we very much deplore the death of Mr. Cowling we are glad that Mrs. Cowling and her little boy are left in such good shape financially.
