Methodist Church & Cemetery * GREEN'S CHAPEL

Green's Chapel Cemetery
Sevier County,
Arkansas

According to local tradition, pioneers established the first congregation of this church in 1841. Services were likely held at another location in the area until 1861 when land was donated for the construction of a church building which became Green's Chapel.

On May 2, 1861 John Washington Green and his wife Lucetta gave land for the establishment of a place of worship for the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Church trustees were Joseph Oglesby, Lewis M. Gore, James Reel, Thomas Markham, and William Baker.

Green's Chapel Cemetery was also established in 1861 when Samuel M. Gordon, a teenage boy, was buried here.

On the knoll south of the cemetery stood a log church built in 1861. In the 1870's it was replaced by one built of lumber. In 1890 and 1896 John D. and Delia Robb gave land for a new church and expansion of the cemetery. This building, completed in 1897, stood at the east side of the cemetery. In 1941 this building underwent extensive renovation, classrooms were added in 1961. In 1993 a fellowship hall was completed and the cemetery was enlarged.
