The Baxter Bulletin, Mountain Home, Arkansas, Novmer 14, 1957:

Gunshot Wound Fatal To Youth

A gunshot wound suffered Wednesday of last week was fatal to Earnest Henry Dwain Ivens, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold C. Ivens, who reside about five miles east of here on Henderson Star route.

Funeral servics were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Oakland Church of Christ with Rev. Robert H. Howerton officiating.

The youth, a ninth grade student at Mountain Home junior high school and a member of the junior football team, told his parents that he tripped and fell while hunting squirrels a short distance from his home, and that his .410 gauge shotgun discharged accidentally.

Although wounded in the head, he managed to climb a fence and walk about one-fourth of a mile to the home of neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. John Oels. Their 16-year-old daughter, Yvonne Oels, was alone at home when he arrived. He laid on the living room floor while she summoned his parents, who had heard the shot and presumed he was shooting at a squirrel.

The accidnet occurred about 2:30 p.m. He was rushed to Saltzman hospital for emergency treatment, then transferred in a Roller ambulance to Boone County Memorial hospital at Harrison, where he underwent surgery for about two and one-half hours. He died at 6:40 a.m. Thursday.

He was born in Baxter county on February 5, 1943. Survivors include his parents, Harold and Agnes Ivens; a sister, Patsy Lou Ivens of the home; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hensley, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ivens.

Interment was in the Oakland cemetery. Foller Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
