VAN WINKLE, Temperance - Mrs. Temperance Van Winkle, widow of the late Peter Van Winkle, died on last Friday morning in this city at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.B. Steele. Mrs. Van Winkle was seventy-seven years old on the first of last January and had been ill just a little over a week. Funeral services were held here Saturday morning at the Steele home, conducted by Rev. O'Bryant of the M.E. church, South. The body was then taken to Fayetteville where it was buried by the side of her husband who died in 1882. Short services were held at the cemetery. In speaking of the life of Mrs. Van Winkle, it is necessary to consider it with that of her husband, Peter Van Winkle. For many years Mr. and Mrs. Van Winkle were among the most prominent families of Northwest Arkansas and there are still many landmarks that bear testimony to the fact. Their descendants are numerous and a number of Rogers' best known citizens are among them. Mr. and Mrs. Van Winkle came to Benton from Washington county early in the fifties and located on White River at the place known as Van Winkle's ferry and where their old home still stands. About 1880 they moved to Fayetteville and built the Van Winkle Hotel. Mr. Van Winkle died at that place and his widow remained there several years. She then moved to near Lowell and built a residence, which is still known as the Van Winkle place, though no one of that name has lived in it for years. Mrs. Van Winkle was a member of the Primitive Baptist church of Springdale. During the last few years Mrs. Van Winkle has made her home with her children. She had been in Rogers about two years with Mrs. Steele. She leaves seven children living: Mrs. J.B. Steele of Rogers; Mrs. Anna Walker of Lowell; Norman Van Winkle of Rogers; J.D. Van Winkle of Ft. Smith; Lee Van Winkle of Oklahoma City; Wallace Van Winkle of Lowell and Dr. Peter Van Winkle of Chicago. The first wife of J.A.C. Blackburn was a Van Winkle.
