His mother died shortly after his birth, and he was reared by his grandmother, Elvira Green.
(Note: The gravestone shows a birth year of 1898; however, other documents give a birth date of August 17, 1897. The gravestone has the surname inscribed as Greene; but most family members spell the name without the final e.)
