CARNAHAN, Samuel Newton - Died, at the residence of his son-in-law, A.J. Maxwell, Bentonville, Arkansas on Monday, March 11th, 1901 at 6:35 p.m., Samuel Newton Carnahan, in the 67th year of his age. The deceased was born on Cane Hill, Washington county, Ark. Nov. 23rd, 1834. He was raised up on the farm and received a liberal education at Cane Hill College, at that time the most popular institution of learning in the State. In his youth he professed faith in Christ as his personal Savior and united with the Cane Hill congregation of the C.P. Church; the first C.P. Church organized in Washington county and perhaps the first church of any denomination in Northwest Arkansas, organized about 1828. He was elected and ordained a Ruling Elder in the congregation when a young man and was for a number of years superintendent of the Sabbath school. July 1860 he was married to Emma Ellen Rollans of Cane Hill, Ark. To them were born 5 children, 4 daughters and one son, all living and favorably known. In 1882 he moved with his family to Benton county, Ark. and located three miles east of Bentonville where he resided for 10 years, where he united with the Woods congregation of the C.P. Church and was elected a Ruling Elder of the congregation. Nine years ago he moved with his family to Pea Ridge, Ark. and united with the Mt. Vernon congregation of the C.P. Church. Again he was elected Ruling Elder and took an active part in the church work. Five years ago his wife died; his daughters married, leaving him unable to comfortably keep house and he has since then been living with his children and kindred. The funeral service was well attended at the C.P. Church, Bentonville, conducted by Rev. J.J. Dunham to the satisfaction and comfort of the family and kindred, after which the remains were borne to the Mt. Eden cemetery and laid beside those of his beloved companion there to rest until raised up by Him who is "the resurrection and the life."
