Died at his home in White River township on the 29th of Oct., 1886, Dr. John C. Carter in the 57th year of his age. One by one the old and honored citizens of Washington county are passing away; but of all who have been taken from our midst perhaps there are none whose loss will be more grievously felt or whose death will elicit a more general feeling of sorrow and deep regret in the community in which they lived than will that of Dr. John C. Carter of Carter's Store. Dr. Carter had an extensive acquaintance throughout the county and none who have ever shared the hospitalizes of his quaint country home can ever forget the kind and hospitable manner in which they were entertained by this noble, generous and good man. John Calhoun Carter was born in Coffey county, Tenn. Dec. 31st, 1828 and came to Washington county, Ark. in the spring of 1852. In 1854, in company with several others he sought his way across the plains and to the gold region of California. In this adventure he was only fairly successful. He returned to this county in 1860 and was married two years thereafter to Miss Minerva Jones who survives him. Dr. Carter became a practicing physician in 1861. In this profession he was very successful and had the utmost confidence of the people among whom he practiced. He abandoned the active practice of this profession in 1869 at which time he engaged in the mercantile business on the Middle Fork of White river, which business he conducted until the time of his death. Dr. Carter was a friend alike to the rich and the poor. He never attached himself to any religious organization but always lived an honest, upright and exemplary life. His remains were followed to their last resting place on the evening of the 30th of Oct. by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his loss and may the great Protector of the universe redeemer them and comfort them in their greatest bereavement. A Friend.
Son of George W. Carter, M.D. and Nancy E. Married Hala Minerva Jones, March 6, 1862, Washington County, Arkansas. Children: Dickie, Willie, Sarah Arizona, George W., Nancy Hattie Etter, James Everett, John Frye.
