The Baxter Bulletin
July 29, 1921
Bud Mansfield who owns and operates the ferry at Cartney, was found dead on a gravel bar by Pearl Fishers Saturday, having in some uncountable way drowned. The day before Mansfield made a trip up the river to Buffalo, a distance of six miles, in a boat. It is presumed that the boat upset with him coming over some rough water and that he struck a rock or otherwise injured himself. He leaves a wife and family.
(Note: Linda Witherspoon Finch, a researcher of the Hudson family, posted the following on Find A Grave Website:
Esquire Sturgeon married Sarah Tommie Hudson, 9 Jan 1898, in Baxter County, Arkansas. They had nine children; Robert Lee, Claude Eugene, Mammie, Cal, Kate, Rhea, Buelah, Willard, Mary Bernice. All children were born in Baxter County. His mother was Caroline Ragan. The family changed the surname around 1919 from Sturgeon to Mansfield. Reason unknown. He went by the name of Bud Mansfield prior to his death. His death notice in the Baxter Bulletin was under Bud Mansfield. He died by drowning in the White River. His wife and children also changed from Sturgeon to Mansfield. He was tall, fair complexion, red hair, and blue eyes. He was a farmer and the owner operator of a local ferry.)
