Alfred Smith, farmer, of Lee's Township, Crawford Co., Ark., was born
in Hawkins County, Tenn., and is a son of John B. Smith and Jane
(Gallahorn) Smith. The father was born and reared in Hawkins County,
and about 1837 immigrated to Arkansas, settling first in Washington
County, from there coming to Crawford County in 1846. He was a soldier
in the War of 1812, and died in the year 1847. The death of the mother
occurred in 1846. Alfred Smith received but a limited education during
his youth, and at the age of eighteen began life on his own account,
as a farm hand. In 1855 he married Miss M. A. Williams, daughter of
Thomas N. and Kansas (Moberly) Williams, of this county. Mrs. Smith
bore him one child, and died in 1865. The following year he was united
in marriage to Miss Melissa C. Brown, who left no children. His
[p.1194] third marriage occurred in 1875, when Mrs. Lucretia Jane
(Finnan) Morris, daughter of Alexander Finnan, of Tennessee, became
his wife. Mr. Smith is a successful farmer, and the owner of 160 acres
of land, about forty-five of which he has under cultivation. He is
non-partisan in politics, but during the war served in the Home Guards
under Capt. Oliver. His wife is a member of the Methodist Church.
