Samuel Haag was born in France Oct. 28th, 1815. After serving the French army for five years he came to America and settled in the State of New York in 1841 where he engaged in business for several years. He was then employed for three years in the service of the U.S. Government as a mechanic. His health then failing he returned to his native country. On regaining his health he came back to America and settled in Southern Kansas where he lived for four years. While there he married Miss Emily Estabrook and in 1876 came to Cherokee City, Benton Co., Ark. where he built the Cherokee House and kept it as a hotel until his death, May 25th, 1892, caused from consumption. Uncle Sam as he was called, was loved by all who knew him. He was not a member of any church but was an honest upright, straight forward man. He was patient through weeks of suffering and passed away peacefully. Mrs. Haag has the sympathy of the entire community in her sad bereavement.
