MIDDLETON, John Lafayette - John Lafayette Middleton was born in Bellbrook, Green county, Ohio Feb. 16, 1837. First married to Mary Elizabeth Jones who died August 31, 1896 in Sharon, Barber county, Kansas. Five children were born to this marrage; two died in infancy; Alice, now dead; Clarence, now dead; and Wilmer. Second marriage to Phoebe Ellen Tankersley who survives him, a Widow in Sharon, Barber county, Kans., September 26, 1897. No children by this marrage. John Lafayette Middleton served in Co. "F", 110 Ohio Infantry Volunteers in the Civil war; and was a pensioner of the United States for his service as a Union Soldier. Comrade Middleton came to Gentry, Benton county, Arkansas Feb. 17th, 1914 where he died on June 5th. 1917 of apoplexy and was buried by Harker Post No. 104, Department of Arkansas, Grand Army of the Republic of which he was an honorable member, on June 6th, 1917 in the Gentry cemetery. The high esteem in which Comrade Middleton was held in Gentry was evidenced by the large and respectable concourse of people attending his funeral, from his residence, and escorting his remains to burial. Comrade Middleton was an upright citizen; estimatble neighbor; affectionate, faithful husband, father and friend. Let us emulate his example. A Comrade.
