Hand Cemetery
Baxter County,
Arkansas

The Hand Cemetery is located at Hall's Chapel which is just a short distance west of Baxter County Road 64 (Jordan Landing Road) and about 1/4 east of Jordan.

The Hand Cemetery was started as a relocation cemetery by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prior to the impounding of Lake Norfork. Graves from four cemeteries that would be in the lake basin were moved to the new location, and the Corps named it New Hand Cemetery. The "New" was quickly dropped by the ones overseeing the cemetery. The bulk of the relocated graves came from the original Hand Cemetery, but the remains from the Russell Cemetery, the Kerley Cemetery and the Ethridge Cemetery were also moved to this location. A toal of 115 marked and 5 unmarked graves were relocated from the original Hand Cemetery; 14 identified graves were relocated from the Russell Cemetery; 3 marked and 13 unmarked graves were relocated from the Kerley Cemetery; and 8 marked graves were relocated from the Etheridge Cemetery.

The people of the area immediately began using the Hand Cemetery following the re-location, and interments are still taking place there. It is a well maintained cemetery.
