Obituary of Joel “Joe” Russ Higgs
From The Mountain Echo (Marion County, AR)
Aug. 31, 1900 Page 3

About three weeks ago, Prof. Joe Higgs, who has been holding a position in the Institute for the blind at Little Rock, for several years, left here to resume his duties at that place. On Wednesday morning of last week, Mrs. C. C. Poynter, Mr. Higgs' sister, at this place, was notified that he was dangerously ill on the Boston mountain, about 25 miles south of Jasper, in Newton county. Mrs. Poynter and H. Estes (his brother-in-law) left at once for his bedside, and his many friends at this place hoped that he would soon recover, but their cherished hopes were blighted on Saturday morning when the sad intelligence of his death reached them. His body was brought back here Saturday night, and on Sunday, in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends, was laid to rest in the Layton grave yard. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. W. House. When Mr. Higgs was quite a young man he was totally deprived of his eyesight; but being ambitious, and having a desire for knowledge he entertained the State Institute for the blind, from which institution he graduated a few years later; after which he secured a position as one of the faculty, which position he has honorably filled ever since. He endured his affliction with great fortitude-in humble submission to Him who doeth all things well, and seemed always cheerful and happy, and his vacations which were usually spent here were looked forward to with happy anticipation by his many friends.
