From lower end of Benton Cemetery #1 looking back toward the newer and separate Mt. Harmony Cemetery.
There are 35 rows, and up to 45 plots per row and over 1000 individuals buried here. The majority of the plots are group plots, varying in size from as few as 6 to perhaps 30. A few round concrete plot markers remain and are associated with records maintained via deliveries to what is referred to as "Benton #1". Graves include those distinterred from the Arkansas State Hospital cemetery on West Markham, the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences, possibly the Little Rock National Cemetery and myriad mortuaries across the central portion of Arkansas. Former patients and Health Services community members, as well as family members and friends with loved ones resting here, have chosen to be buried near their families. Thus, it is incorrect to assume that all individuals here are or have ever been patients of the Arkansas State Hospital System. Many state records are difficult to locate, making it impossible to appropriately mark family graves and honor loved ones.
