Fayetteville, Ark., Dec. 13.- Funeral services for Mrs. Anna P. King at her home in Fayetteville Tuesday marked the passing of the first woman student to enter the University of Arkansas. Mrs. King died here at 9 p.m. Sunday following an illness of about three months. Born in 1855 Mrs. King, who formerly was Miss Anna Putman, on January 22, 1872 entered the preparatory department of the state university then known as the Arkansas Industrial University. Eight students were enrolled on the opening day of the institution, Mrs. King being the only woman in the class. Mrs. King lived to see the university grow from that small number to its present enrollment of about 1700 students. At the age of 19 Mrs. King began a teaching career which lasted until her death. During those 53 years she taught primary grades in the public schools of Fayetteville in all but one year when she was a teacher at Cincinnati, Ark. Her husband, Charles King, formerly of Greenwood, Ark., preceded her in death by 20 years. She leaves a sister, Mrs. Mary Deaver of Springdale and a brother, L.R. Putman of Evanston, Ill. She was buried in the Evergreen cemetery at Fayetteville.
