Rev. Morton Harlin Shelton, 84, of Piggott, died Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at his residence. Hr was a retired United Methodist minister and was attending the Wrights Chapel United Methodist Church.

Born on a farm in the Strangers Home community, west of Alicia, on February 27, 1927, he attended elementary school at Alicia and later graduated from Swifton High School. He was a farmer for several years before entering the ministry, and continued to have a great interest in farming.

He entered into the ministry in 1978, attended the course of study at Perkins and at St. Paul schools of theology, as well as one year at Hawaii Loa College. He also attended ASU at Jonesboro. He became an associate member of the United Methodist Arkansas Conference in 1984.

His ministry was in the North Arkansas Conference, and he served the following charges: Imboden-Smithville, Umsted-Hope, Shiloh-Stanford, Marvell-Lexa, Desha-Southside, Mammoth Spring and Camp.

On the district, he served on the District Committee on Ordained Ministry. He participated in a tour-study of the Holy Land and of Wesley in England. He also participated in a ministerial exchange to Stafford, England.

Survivors include his wife, Vondala Shelton of the home; one son, Morton Harlin “Butch” Shelton, Jr.; two daughters, Saundra Rodriguez of Ft. Worth, Texas and Deborah Campbell of Yellville; one stepson and four stepdaughters. He is also survived by two brothers, Ronnie Shelton of Jonesboro, and Donnie Shelton of Springdale; six grandchildren, Johnothan Harlin Hunter, Beverly Summer Rodriguez, Jerry Lee Campbell II, Lezlie Elizabeth Buechler, Nathan Shelton and Patrick Shelton; and by six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Viola Elizabeth Shelton; his parents, Kell and Ethel Shelton; two brothers; and six sisters.

Visitation will be Friday from 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home, Paragould.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 31st, at the Shiloh United Methodist Church, Paragould, with John Sandine, Eddie Harris and David Swift officiating. Burial will be in the Strangers Home Cemetery, Alicia.

United Methodist ministers will be honorary pall bearers.
