GRAVETTE — Forrest R. Goodenough, 86, of Gravette died Aug. 14, 2004, at Gravette Medical Center. He was born July 27, 1918, in South Bend, Ind., to Forrest and Bertha Striebel Goodenough. He lost his sight at age 5. He attended Butler University and DePauw University and earned a master's degree at Eastman School of Music. In the 1940s, he lived in New York City and was the staff pianist at NBC and played jazz piano at the Cotillion Room and the Barbary Room. In 1949, he accepted a faculty position at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, teaching theory and composition. In 1952, he and his wife, Dorothy Churchill Goodenough began 25 years of teaching at Texas State School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. He died while an auditorium of hundreds of friends, former students and family celebrated his life and his contributions. The auditorium was renamed the Goodenough Performance Hall. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy.

Survivors include one daughter, Crow Johnson Evans and husband Dr. Arthur F. Evans of Gravette.

There are no services planned. Memorial contributions may be made to All Blind Children of Texas, 1100 W. 45th St., Austin, Texas, 78756, Attn: Goodenough Fund.

Arrangements are by Wasson Funeral Home in Siloam Springs.

GRAVETTE — Dorothy Churchill Goodenough, 86, of Gravette died Jan. 11, 2004, at Quail Ridge Living Center in West Siloam Springs, Okla. She was born March 22, 1917, in Melrose, Mass., to Ralph Melchar and Gladys Blake Churchill. Formerly of Austin, Texas and Boston, Mass, where she was a teacher and a violinist, she had lived in Gravette for the past year.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Forrest Goodenough of the home; one stepdaughter, Crow Johnson Evans and husband Dr. Arthur Evans of Gravette.

Private graveside services will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Gravette, under the direction of Wasson Funeral Home in Siloam Springs.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 320 N. Greenwood Ave., Fort Smith, 72901.
