Lt. Col. (Ret.) Sylvia M. Evans, 72, 901 Northwest B St., Bentonville, died Oct. 19 at Bates Hospital. Born March 6, 1902, at Sedalia (Benton County), she was the daughter of William L. and Evelyn Wishon Evans and a member of the Christian Church. She attended Bentonville schools and was graduated from Levi Memorial Hospital nursing school in Hot Springs. She became an Army nurse at Fort Sam Houston, Texas in 1928; served seven years in the Philippine Islands; three years at West Point Military Academy in New York and was chief nurse at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland where she received the military rank of major. After serving in England during World War II, Maj. Evans was assigned to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. and was promoted to Lt. Col. When she retired from Valley Forge, Penn. hospital in 1955, she was the third highest ranking nurse in the U.S. Army. She returned to Bentonville in 1956.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd A. Evans of the home; one brother, Lawton Evans, Rogers; two sisters, Mrs. Zella Van Hook, Rogers, and Mrs. Velva McCullough, Bentonville.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Burns Funeral Chapel, Bentonville, with pastor Walter Buchanan and the Rev. Cecil Garrison officiating. Burial will be in Rambo Cemetery under the direction of Burns.

Inscription on stone: When the roll is called up yonder we will be ready to serve again.
