Burton O. George, Jr., 78, of Berryville died Saturday, July 23, 2005, at his home. He was a life-long resident of Berryville, born on April 26, 1927, to Burton O. and Helene Schrader George, Sr.

Mr. George served in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II in the Army of Occupation in Korea as a member of the 61st Ordinance Group. He also served in the Korean War as a member of the 936th Field Artillery. He then attended Drury College in Springfield, Mo., where he was a member of the Epsilon Beta chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity. After 23 years of service in the Army and the Arkansas National Guard he retired with the rank of major.

Mr. George served two terms beginning in 1952 as County Clerk of Carroll County before accepting a position with the Department of Civil Defense. He then served 40 years at The First National Bank of Berryville as cashier, executive vice president, president, chief executive officer, and chairman of the board respectively before retiring in 1989. He served on the board of directors from 1954-1993. He was a founding director of Arkansas Bankers Bank of Little Rock and was currently serving on the Board of Directors of Jack Henry and Associates, Inc. of Monett, Mo.

Mr. George currently served as a member of the Berryville City Council. He served on many civic boards and committees during his lifetime including the Berryville Volunteer Fire Department, the Arkansas State Library Board, the Berryville Library Board, was a founding member of the Carroll-Madison Library Foundation Board, and a founding director of the Office of Human Concern. He was a loyal Democrat.

He was a member of the Berryville United Methodist Church, a Paul Harris Fellow of the Berryville Rotary Club, a 59-year member of American Legion Smith-Bobo Post 172, a 54-year member of B.P.O.E. Eureka Springs Lodge 1042, a member of the U.S. and Arkansas National Guard Associations, and Reserved Officers Association of the U.S.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald George of Berryville. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Alice Chafin George of the home; a daughter, Cindy George; a son, Paul George; and one granddaughter, Johnice Dominick, all of Berryville. He is also survived by sister-in-law Barbara George of Berryville; nephew David George of Bentonville; niece Jerre George of Pine Bluff; brother-in-law Gene Chafin and his wife Leone; niece Amy Chafin Rogers, all of Berryville; nephew Will Chafin of New York, New York; numerous cousins and a host of friends.

A memorial service was held Monday, July 25, at Berryville United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carroll-Madison Library Foundation, Berryville Library Building Fund, 106 Spring Street, Berryville, 72616 or to the Berryville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 267, Berryville.
