Former Sharp County Sheriff Guthrie R. Goodwin, 68, of Ash Flat, Arkansas, died Saturday, April 16 at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. Goodwin served as Sheriff from 1951-1957. He was a state parole officer from 1957-1967 and served as Warden of the Tucker Prison Unit of the Arkansas Department of Corrections from 1967-1968. In 1972, he retired from police service after serving as Captain of the Weights and Standards Police of the Arkansas Highway Department. He was also a member of the board of directors for the North Arkansas Human Services System. Mr. Goodwin was a 40-year member of the Church of Christ and was a Mason. In 1951 Goodwin was made a life-time honorary deputy with the Dallas Police Department after he captured four Texas men wanted for the shooting death of a Dallas policeman and the wounding of another. The four men were captured in Hardy as they attempted to sell a shotgun at the old Jackson Hardware Store on Main Street. Goodwin was not wounded in the incident but a bullet did pass through the crown of the Sheriff's hat. Goodwin was aided in the arrest by his deputy Lloyd "Peavine" Clouse. In addition to the Dallas Police honors, Goodwin and Clouse were awarded keys to the city and were given magnum pistols by the Dallas officers. Goodwin also received the Dubler Award for bravery; the FBI "Man-of-the-Year" Award for his valor in the capture of 4 of the FBI's "10-Most-Wanted"; and the Martin Kane Award from the True Police Cases magazine. Mr. Goodwin was born March 30, 1920, in Lynn, Arkansas, a son of the late George Folsom and Melissa May Epperson Goodwin. On February 13, 1942, he married Audra Evans. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Fred Goodwin and Johnny Goodwin, both of Ash Flat; two grandchildren, Toby Goodwin and Misha Goodwin, both of Ash Flat; two sisters, Lena Webb of Coolidge, AZ, and Wanda Weeks of Purdy, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers - Duey and George, and two sisters - Honoree Pruitt and Virginia McClendon. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 19 at the Ash Flat Church of Christ with Jack Richardson officiating. Congregational singing was led by Charles Wilson. Burial followed in the Wiles Cemetery under the direction of Tri-County Funeral Service of Highland. Serving as pallbearers were Dale Welch, Frankie Wells, Wayburn Welch, Danny Garwood, Jackie Huff and Frank Arnold. Honorary pallbearers were Soopy Martin, Homer Branscum, Jake Johnson, Roy Orr, Ivan Semple, Bryan Bristow, Ted Farris, J.B. Dailey, Harlan Mullins, Guy Branscum, and Lynn Garner. 414jones@gmail.com
