ROGERS — Dr. John Robert "Bob" Bland passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Rogers.

Bob Bland was born Oct. 10, 1925, in Carthage to Jesse Bland and Bessie Holmes Bland. He grew up in Carthage along with three sisters, and attended Henderson State University, the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, and graduated from Arkansas A&M (Monticello) with a Bachelor of Science degree. He continued his studies at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, graduating from their dental school four years later.

He met Mary Reed while attending college in Monticello, and they married on Aug. 20, 1949. They moved to Rogers upon his graduation from dental school. While practicing dentistry for 37 years in Rogers and raising two children, Dr. Bland was instrumental in dental associations throughout Arkansas. He served as president of the Ozark Dental Study Club, president of Northwest District Dental Association and president of the Arkansas Dental Association.

Bob Bland also loved Rogers, his newly adopted hometown, and was a vital part of its growth during that time. Bland served his community as founding board member of the Adult Development Center, served on the NACC Foundation, was on the founding board of NorthWest Arkansas Community College, as well as serving on the Advisory Board for Rogers St. Mary's Hospital. He was also a hospice care volunteer and on their board of directors. Bob served as chairman of Farmer's and Merchants Bank board for 16 years, was president of the Rogers Public School Board for 15 years, served on the board of the Rogers little League, president of the Rogers Lions Club, vice president of the Rogers Chamber of Commerce, and vice president of the Rogers United Way. Bland was awarded the very first "Good Neighbor" award from the Rogers Chamber of Commerce in 1984. Bob never wanted any credit for it, but he loved to serve and help other people, and was listed by a local newspaper, as one of the top 125 people who influenced the growth of Rogers. Bob loved to hunt and fish, and was an avid Arkansas Razorback fan. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church.

Dr. Bland was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years Mary Reed Bland. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Maggie Lou Richardson.

Bland is survived by his wife of nine years, Jean D. Bland, of Rogers; a daughter, Belynda Bland of Tulsa, Okla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Debbie Bland of Bentonville; two sisters, Frances Starks of Malvern and Polly Bales of Hot Springs; three grandchildren, Jesse Bland of Nashville, Tenn., John Bland of Conway and Anna Bland of Waco, Texas.

A public funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, in the Mausoleum Chapel of Benton County Memorial Park, with the Rev. Sandra Wanasek officiating. Entombment will follow the service. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Stockdale Funeral Services in Rogers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in honor of Dr. Bob Bland to Circle of Life Hospice, 901 Jones Road, Springdale. 72762.
