Well Known Citizen of Calico Rock Dies

Mrs. Willie Bethel Copp VanWinkle, well known business and professional woman of Calico Rock, for the past several months a resident of Van Buren, died in a Ft. Smith hospital February 18, following several days illness.

Mrs. VanWinkle, 43 years of age was born in Calico Rock, the daughter of the late W. J. and Octavia Copp. She grew to womanhood there and attended the local schools, graduating from Calico Rock High School in 1922. She attended Galloway College at Searcy and graduated from that institution in 1926 and later that year accepted the position of teacher of mathematics in the Rogers High School, which position she held for eight years. Upon the death of her father in 1935, she returned to Calico Rock and assumed the management of his insurance business.

She became a member of the Calico Rock High School faculty in 1936 and held this position until her retirement from teaching two years ago. She was married to Fowler H. VanWinkle of Rogers in 1935. They were residents of Calico Rock until two years ago, when Mr VanWinkle's work as civil engineer called him to Van Buren.

Mrs. VanWinkle was a devout Christian, being a member of the Methodist Church. She was one of the community's most accomplished and talented women and was active in the religious, civic and social life of the communities she resided.

Survivors include her brother, Dr. Noel Copp and a niece, Bonnie Noel Copp of Calico Rock.

Funeral services, attended by a large gathering of relatives and friends were conducted at the Calico Rock Methodist Church, Friday, at 2:00 p.m., by the Rev. W. T. Watson, pastor. Mrs. Eugene Warren was soloist. Interment was in the Rose Lawn Cemetery, with the Roller Funeral Service in charge.
