Widely Known Minister Dies Thursday Afternoon

Rev. D. E. Steely, pastor of the Baptist Church of Calico Rock, passed away at his home in the east part of town, Thursday afternoon about 2:30 o'clock. He was 55 years of age.

His death was not unexpected, as he had been in failing health for several years and his condition has been quite grave since he suffered a paralytic stroke several months ago. Deceased was a life-long resident of this state. He was born at Bee Branch, Van Buren County, where his early life was spent. He resided in Johnson, Perry and Cleburne counties a number of years and moved to Calico Rock about five years ago. He has held pastorates at Clarkesville, Almyra, Bigelow and Calico Rock in addition to his having devoted much time to evangelistic and mission work. He became widely known over North Arkansas for his abilities as a minister – his knowledge of the Bible and the force and manner of delivering his sermons. He endeared himself to all by his daily mien and action which identified him as one worthy of the highest confidence and respect.

Surviving are wife; four sons, Thelbert of Terra Haute, Indiana, John Edd, a student in Ouachita College, Arkadelphia, Ark., Arthur and Lewis Len of Calico Rock; three daughters, Mrs. Troy Smith of Mountain View, Ark., and Ruth and Betty Lou Steely of Calico Rock; two grandchildren, Don Steely of Terra Haute, Ind., and Janet Smith of Mountain View; one brother Ernest Steely, of Clarks, La., and three sisters, Mrs. S. H. Woodruff of Blytheville, Ark., Mrs. A. C. Cooper of Hackett, Ark., and Mrs. Della Pruitt of San Diego, Calif.

Funeral services will be held at the Baptist Church Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with the Rev. Stanley Cooper, pastor of the Baptist Church at Viola in charge. Interment will be in Rose Lawn cemetery at this place.
