Walter Smith Called by death.

After an illness of several months, Walter W. Smith of this place died last Saturday morning at 3:45 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Watson.

Walter's death did not come as a surprise, as he had been in a critical condition for several months previous to his death and about a week before the end came he took a more serious turn and not withstanding the constant attention and medical aid that was given him, together with the unusual optimistic and courageous spirit shown by him throughout his entire illness, it became apparent that he was growing weaker and that he could hold out but a few hours longer.

Walter W. Smith was born near this place thirty-six years ago, being a son of "Uncle Dave" Smith of this vicinity. He grew to manhood here and in 1909 was married to Miss Arkie Watson, to which union was born one child. The wife died in 1912 and the infant a short time later. Only a short time after his marriage Walter suffered affliction to his eyesight and was almost totally blind three or four years. After intensive treatment he regained his sight and was employed at the State Hospital at Little Rock and later in state institutions in Iowa and Arizona where he made an unusual good record as a reliable employee, popular with everyone. Two or three years ago he became troubled with a lower bronchial trouble and was admitted to the Modern Woodmen hospital at Woodmen, Colo., where he was under treatment till about the first of this year when he was brought back here. He was been confined in bed for the past few months.

The death of this beloved and well know young man strikes sadness to everyone, especially to those who have been privileged to know him and associate with him. Those who have had the privilege shall always remember him as a friend of the ideal type. His fidelity and kindness to all and his even temperament caused him to be loved by all. He was every in a cheerful mood and it was a pleasure to be in his company at any time, for that same sunny disposition was always there. Even in his serious afflictions and reversion he withstood it all with a startling degree of fertitude and patience, at all times realizing the seriousness of his physical condition and fully satisfied as to his spiritual condition. Walter has been a member of the M. E. Church, South, for several years.

Deceased is survived by his father, "Uncle Dave" Smith, one sister Mrs. R. E. Wood and a brother, Dr. H. H. Smith all of Calico Rock and two other brothers – Ben Smith of Oklmulgee, Okla., and Ambrose Smith of Kansas City.

Burial took place at the Calico Rock Cemetery Sunday afternoon, funeral services being conducted at the grave by Rev. J. E. Snell of Newark and Elder D. M. Carter of this place.
