Mrs. Athy Dies in Little Rock Monday

Mrs. Mattie Rose Athy, aged 37, wife of Charles F. Athy of 215-1/2 Barton Ave. Little Rock, passed away last Monday morning, after a very brief illness, her death following by only a few moments the birth of her infant daughter, which also failed to survive. The death, which occurred in a hospital in that city, was result of unforeseen complications and came as a shock to the family and a host of friends. Mrs. Athy (nee Stoner) was born in Calico Rock and the greater part of her life was spent here. Upon reaching school age, in order that she might avail herself of the training afforded deaf-mutes she entered the Deaf-Mute Institute in Little Rock, attending regularly until her graduation from that institution a few years later. Calico Rock was her home until her marriage in December 1920, since which time she has resided in Little Rock. As a student, she made an enviable record, at the same time commanding the love and esteem of all those with whom she was associated.

The remains of mother and infant were borne here in a single casket, accompanied by members of the family, relatives and friends, arriving on the one o'clock train, Tuesday. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church by the pastor, Elder T. H. Sherrill. For benefit of the several deaf friends from Little Rock who attended, the sermon was transmitted simultaneously in the sign language, Mrs. Edna Cox of Little Rock acting as interpreter.

Interment was in Rose Lawn Cemetery, Rev. F. G. Villines conducting final rites at the graveside.

Besides the husband and one son, Charles, Jr., deceased is survived by her mother, Mrs. Mollie Churchill, of Calico Rock; three sisters, Mrs. S. C. Berry of Berry, Mrs. Earl R. Wiseman of Little Rock and Miss Zelma Stoner of Calico Rock; three brothers, William and Paul Stoner of Calico Rock and Homer Stoner of Mellette, South Dakota.
