Smithson

James B. Smithson Jr. of Mountain Home, son of Rose Churchill Smithson Clark and the late J. B. Smithson, was born March 21, 1946, in Calico Rock. He died December 2, 1996, at Baxter County Regional Hospital in Mountain Home. He was 50.

Mr. Smithson was united in marriage to Penelope "Penni" Young October 4, 1973 in Mountain Home. He worked for Baxter County Regional Hospital and was self-employed. He was a member of the Twin Lakes Gun Club, Twin Lakes Chapter of Disabled American Veterans, and a life member of the National Rifle Association. His military service included a Desert Storm Veteran, four years service in the U.S. Marine Corps; and 22 years of service in the Army National Guard. He was a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother of Mountain Home; one daughter, Elizabeth Ann Smithson of Detroit, Michigan; two brothers, Rick Smithson of Amarillo, Texas; and Nick Smithson of Calico Rock; four sisters, Mahala Brixey of Houston, Texas; Mary Wells of Mountain Home; Shondra Rocke of Little Rock; and Gena Bird of Germany; two step-sisters, Sherry Mason of Mountain Home; and Brenda Dodd of Little Rock; one grandchild; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral services were held December 5, 1996, at the Roller Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Billie Jean Tate officiating.

Pallbearers were 1SG James Fountain; MSG Donnie Larimer, SFC Jack Wilson, SSG Dennis McDonald; and SSG Paul Craig. Honorary pallbearers were MAJ Russel McFarland, SFC Lee Johns, SSG Harrol King, SSG Tommy Wallis, and MSG Thomas Caldwell.

Military graveside services were conducted by the North Central Arkansas Veterans Council with the Ozark VFW Post #3246 as the honor guard.

Interment was at the Roselawn Cemetery in Calico Rock under direction of Roller Funeral Home in Mountain Home.
