a.k.a. Charles W. Darling
Born Rice Lake, Barron County, Wisconsin.
Died Calico Rock, Izard County, Arkansas.
Reared by Mr. & Mrs. George W. Durant.
Married Rose Bauch, 1929, Texas.

Charles W. Darling's parents died when he was very young. An aunt and uncle, Mr. & Mrs. George W. Durant of Dora Springs, Iowa, took him and reared him. He assumed the Durant name even though the Durants never formally adopted him.

When he was old enough, he enlisted in the Army under the Durant name. He served on the Mexican border preceding World War I, and went overseas with the first contingent to reach France. He was in some of the most important engagements, and was gassed and wounded several times. He was awarded citations for distinguished service. After being discharged and working a few years, he re-enlisted in the Army, and served this time in Texas.

He married Rose Bauch while serving in the Army in Texas in 1929.

In April 1943, a child living in the house where Durant formerly lived, discovered a hand sticking out of a shallow grave in the back yard. Authorities disinterred the remains from the shallow grave which was about ten feet from the back kitchen porch. The body had been buried not more than six inches below the surface. An autopsy was performed, including X-Rays of the head, and it was determined that Charles W. Durant had been shot behind the left ear. His body was then buried in the Roselawn Cemetery at Calico Rock, Arkansas.
