February 9, 1912
Bill Tarr, the well-known locomotive engineer, was instantly killed at a point a short distance from the west approach of the tunnel last Monday, the accident being the result of a collision of a small motor car and the engine of the work train. Mr. Tarr and William McCullam of the claim department, were on the motor on their way to the tunnel where some excavation was in progress by the work train when suddenly they came around the curve and clashed into the work train engine without warning. McCullam and Tarr both tried to jump but the latter failed to clear the rail and his body was severed in twain.
