Swifton Youth Killed in Effort to Break Horse for Pulling
Farm Boy Disregards Father's Warning, Is Kicked in Head
His attempt to "break in" and drive a young and unbroken horse while his parents and others of his family were at church, resulted in the instant death Sunday morning, August 19, 1928, of Dorris Hatfield, age 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vester Hatfield living a short distance north of Swifton.
The boy was kicked in the head, his skull was fractured and his right eye was torn from its socket.
The accident occurred about 11:30. Three other youths are said to have been present. Young Hatfield had succeeded in harnessing the horse and had attached it to a buggy before he was kicked. After kicking the boy the horse ran away.
Young Hatfield's father is said to have warned him before he left for church to let the horse alone.
Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. I. L. Claud, pastor of the Methodist Church at Swifton. Burial was at Arnold Cemetery.
The deceased is survived by his parents a brother and a sister.
