Wofford's Chapel (aka Wofford) (African American) Cemetery
Arkansas County,
Arkansas

The Citizens for Immanuel is a non-profit organization that is located at #68 Immanauel Rd., Arkansas County, Arkansas. The members are individuals who attended the Immanuel School in Almyra, Arkansas (District #73) prior to integration in 1966. The Immanuel School was supported by the Baptist Churches of the White River District until 1948. After 1948 the state of Arkansas began to support the school and continued that state support until 1966 through the DeWitt Public Schools. In 1966, the school buildings and the property reverted back to the White River District.

Two of the churches of the White River District that have large cemeteries are St. Olive Missionary Baptist Church of rural Dewitt and Wofford Chapel Missionary Baptist Church of Casscoe, Arkansas. Both Churches have cemeteries that date back to the late 1800’s/early 1900’s when this area of Arkansas County was settled by African Americans during the Arkansas Migration Period after slavery.

The goal of the African American Cemeteries Project is to document and preserve the history of these two cemeteries through grave identification, headstone documentation, obituary research and collection, video recordings of elderly church members oral recollections, and printed research from the Immanuel Archives and other resources.

Partners in this project were the Arkansas Humanities Council, Little Rock, Arkansas, the Citizens for Immanuel of Almyra, Arkansas, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Art Department and the School of Arts and Sciences , of Pine Bluff, Arkansas and Ms. Peggy Bullock of First Electric Cooperative of Stuttgart, Arkansas. Donations can be sent to the Citizens for Immanuel at #68 Immanuel Rd. Almyra, Arkansas 72003
