Holmes Cemetery is located on both sides of an Ashley County road on the bank of Bayou Bartholomew. My 84-year old father took me to this cemetery in the summer of 2009. He passed the cemetery each day on his way to school in Portland. In the 1930s, it was on a dirt road but the county has now paved the road. On this side of the road it is unkept and there are many unmarked graves in the weeds.
There was no cemetery sign. We went into Portland and finally found someone who told us the name of the cemetery.
