After graduation, Thomas joined the Army Air Corps and went through flight school to become a sergeant pilot. He served during World War II as a pilot in the China-Burma-India Theatre and also served in the Korean War. He retired from the Air Force in 1961 as a 20-year veteran and command pilot with over 4,000 hours. His decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with one oak leaf cluster and numerous campaign ribbons.
