Joseph Daniel (Joe) Hertlein

Joseph Daniel (Joe) Hertlein, 85, of Subiaco died Sunday, Dec 10, 2006, at North Logan Mercy Hospital in the compassionate care of hospital staff and family. He was born at home on Aug. 16, 1921, to the late Joseph and Bernadine (Kruse) Hertlein in Subiaco. Joe attended St. Benedict’s Grade School and the obtained high school equivalency in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Frances Maledon; and two brothers, Edward Hertlein and John Hertlein. An important presence in the lives of his family, he is survived by his wife of 55 years, Hilda (Core) Hertlein; daughter, Karen Elizabeth Binz and husband Donald of Paris; son, Joseph Stephen (Steve) and wife Suzanne of Subiaco; daughter, Barbara Ann McHargue and husband John of San Diego; daughter, Kay Berry and partner, Bob Campbell of Deer; daughter, Donna Marie Hertlein and husband John Lane of Chattanooga, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren with one expected. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Matt Hertlein, Gregory Binz, Sean McHargue and Cory Berry as well as grandsons-in-law, Luke Porter and Michael Langley. Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Jasper and Art Carter, and grandson Nova Hertlein Lane.
Following his childhood on his family’s farm, he enlisted in the Paris National Guard prior to mobilization for World War II. During World War II, he was a member of the 142nd Field Artillery Unit and served in the European Theater, participating in the invasion of southern France and other campaigns, ending the war with the liberation of Germany. During his active federal military service, he and his family traveled extensively. Additionally, he received several awards, the note of Good Conduct with four Bronze Loops. He married Hilda Core married 27 Aur 1951. He retired after 20 plus years of service, in 1964 and returned to his farming roots in Arkansas. For the next 40 years, he successfully operated a broiler poultry and beef cattle farm. He had a fondness for a good coon hound, Santa Gertudis cross-bred cattle, long talks at the Farmer’s Coop and hard work.
