Mary Elizabeth Myers

Mary Elizabeth Myers, 91, of Little Rock, formerly of Black Rock, died Aug. 8, 2004, at Parkway Health Center in Little Rock.

Born Sept. 23, 1912, in Black Rock, she was the daughter of Sebastian and Pearl Judkins Spades. She graduated from Black Rock High School in 1931 as valedictorian, and was a graduate of Judkins Business College in Pine Bluff. She lived in Lawrence County for 64 years, where she was a member of the Black Rock United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She taught school at Strawberry before moving to Walnut Ridge in the early 1930s. She worked at First National Bank of Lawrence County for 14 years and served on the bank's Board of Directors. She remained an honorary member of the board until her death. She also served as treasurer of the Oak Forest Cemetery Association.

In the late 1960s, she was among several Lawrence Countians who recognized the need to preserve the Lawrence County Courthouse at Powhatan. As fund-raising chairman of that effort, she and her committee raised sufficient private donations to qualify the project for federal and state matching funds, enabling full restoration.

In 1976, she moved to Clinton, where she was a member of the Clinton United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, Unit III. She spent her final four years at Parkway Village in Little Rock. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay H. Myers, in 1973, whom she married Feb. 14, 1947; three brothers, Joseph Spades, Sebastian Spades and Michael Spades; two sisters, Jennie Sue Moore and Virginia Madsen.

Survivors include a brother, Richard Spades, Cabot; and two sisters, Rowena Lawson, Fairfield Bay, and Kathryn Callahan, Pocahontas.

Funeral was Tuesday at 2 p.m. at House-Gregg Funeral Home with Harold Russell and Jerry Pentecost officiating. Burial was in Oak Forest Cemetery at Black Rock.

Great-nephews served as pallbearers.
