Cave-In Near Mt. Pleasant Kills Miner

A 48 year-old miner was killed instantly Thursday morning of last week in a mine cave-in near Mount Pleasant just across the Independence county line.

The victim was Elisha Caraway, who lived just off Highway 69 south of Mt. Pleasant.

Mr. Caraway, who was employed by Troy and Noel McMahan is a manganese recovery operation, was digging into a bank of the ore when some rock and earth from overhead caved in on him, witnesses reported.

He was struck by a solid mass about "the size of a barrel" and died instantly. He was covered by dirt and rock from the chest down, witnesses said.

Mr. Caraway was working with two brothers, Floyd and Earl Caraway of Mount Pleasant and two nephews, Don and Vaughn Caraway, when the accident occurred about 10:30. Floyd Caraway also was hit by the cave-in but was not hurt.

Mr. Caraway is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ida Caraway: two other brothers, Will of Cushman and Lonnie of Batesville; two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Anderson of Bethesda and Mrs. Pearl Garland of Michigan and his mother, Mrs. Dora Caraway of Mount Pleasant.

The funeral was held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with the Rev. George Roberts officiating.
