The Staggs Cemetery is three miles south of the Baxter and Izard Counties line on Arkansas Highway 5 and then one and a half miles east on Izard County Road 46 which is also know as the Staggs Cemetery Road and as the State Department of Corrections Road. The cemetery is at the north end of the parking lot for the Arkansas Department of Correction’s North Central Unit.
The oldest marked grave with a death date is that of Mary Jennings who died July 12, 1884. There may older burials that are either unmarked or without an inscribed death date. There are many graves that are marked with only a field stone; however, the cemetery association in recent years has tried to identify as many of those graves as possible. When they gain an identity, they mark the grave with home crafted gravestone with the name imbedded in an aluminum strip that is attached to the marker.
The cemetery is extremely well maintained. The inmates from the adjacent prison perform the maintenance duties.
