James W. Blair was born in Monroe county, Tennessee July 17, 1849. He spent his early life there and there was married to Hester A. Jones. They came to Arkansas in 1881 and soon afterwards he located on a farm near Decatur which he ever afterward made his home. He was the father of six children, five of whom are living. When a young man he was converted but did not join the church until recent years. As there was no church of his choice at Decatur he joined the C.P. church at Bentonville. Mr. Blair was a successful farmer and took great pleasure in his farm work. He was known by all for his undoubted integrity and honesty. He was accustomed to hide his good deeds as much as possible and the recipients of his charity were often the only ones who knew of it. He was accommodating to his neighbors and friends in a marked degree. No one ever asked him for a favor that was not bestowed if it were in his power to do so. He raised a refined, cultured family. His boys are all graduates of the State University and hold good positions in the business world. Their place will be secure if they carry out the high principles of honesty and uprightness which their father taught them by his example. Mr. Blair was a strong man and enjoyed good health and his family fondly believed father would live to be old and enjoy the good things of this life which they had planned to give him in his declining years. But it was not to be. God had other purposes. A year ago he took valvular disease of the heart and his physicians told him from the first that his case was serious. The Masonic Order had charge of the burial service and he was laid away with that beautiful ceremony. Sleeping in Bethel cemetery till the trump shall sound and the dead come forth and be forever with the Lord.
