Louis Phillip Burckle, a well-known fruit grower of Decatur, died suddenly Saturday morning at his home two miles south of that town following a stroke of apoplexy. The news of his death was a distinct blow to the community as he had known but few sick days in the 20 or more years he had lived near Decatur. Although nearly 75 years of age he was as vigorous as a man of 60. He cared for his fruit farm with but little extra help during the busy season. His fruit farm was always well kept and regarded as a model one. On the morning of his death he appeared as strong and cheerful as ever and had gone out with his hired hands to clean out his strawberry fields. The men said that Mr. Burckle was able to do as much work as the rest of them. They finished the work about ten o'clock and Mr. Burckle went to his house. A short time afterwards he was found by them near his garage sitting down and groaning. He was carried into the house but he lived but a few minutes afterwards. Mr. Burckle was born in southern Indiana December 15, 1854. He moved with his parents when a child to Louisville, Ky. and when 14 years of age he went with his father to Florida where he lived until 1888. In 1886 he married Miss Mary Gille, a daughter of James M. Gille, pioneer wholesale hardware merchant and president of the Gille Hardware & Iron Company of Kansas City. Mr. Burckle was city salesman for the firm until 1907 when he moved to Decatur with his family to engage in fruit farming. During his 22 years residence in Decatur he made many friends and the funeral services held at the M.E. Church Wednesday afternoon was well attended. The pastor, Rev. J.L. Henderson, officiated at the service, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Gorsline. A choir of the two churches sang his favorite hymns. The floral offerings were many and beautiful, many coming from distant friends. Burial followed immediately after in the City Cemetery. Besides his widow, Mrs. Mary G. Burckle, he is survived by two sons, Gille Burckle of Kansas City, Jack Burckle of Elsinore, Calif. and a daughter, Mrs. N.B. Gholson of Garden Grove, Calif. and three grandsons, also eight brothers, all but one of whom live in Kentucky. The three children were present at the funeral.
