Alfred F. Keith, who passed away in his 82nd year Aug. 27, 1930, was widely known in the western part of Benton County where he had lived for 35 years, as well as in Bentonville where 20 of his declining years were spent. Uncle Alf, as he was generally known, was born in Marrs Hill, N. Caro. Feb. 13, 1849. His father, James Keith, dying when Alf was but a small boy. In 1868 the widow and her five sons immigrated with others to Benton County. A tract of land in Coon Hollow, west of Decatur, was taken up which has been kept in the family ever since. A year after coming here and at the age of 20 he married Miss Josephine Coats, the daughter of a well known family in that community. To them were born 11 children but only three remain. These are Ray D. Keith of Bentonville; Charles D. Keith and Mrs. Ethel Howell of Wewoka, Okla. After his marriage he taught school for a number of years, teaching at Bozarth, Bloomfield and Cherokee City. Later the Keith family moved to Rogers where Mr. Keith engaged in the grocery business for five years. Following a spell of illness they returned to their farm but a short time after moved to Gravette where he again entered the grocery business. About 20 years ago he moved to Bentonville which had since been his home. Some seven years after the death of his wife he was married to Mrs. Nola Hobbs Dunlap, who passed away two years ago. Mr. Keith joined the Baptist church when a boy and served as a deacon in the Coats Baptist church until he moved to Bentonville where he was an active deacon in the local Baptist Church until he died. Both Mr. and Mrs. Keith were regular attendants at Sunday School. With the exception of two or three years he attended every session of the Benton County Baptist Association for the past 44 years. In the company of his son, C.D. Keith, he motored in June to his former home in Marrs Hill to see again the home of his childhood. He enjoyed very much the trip to the early family home. Since his return he had been failing in health and strength. His funeral was largely attended and he was buried beside his first wife in the old Coats cemetery on the Spavinaw, west of Decatur.
