FREEMAN, Ben - {from Fairmount} On Monday, Sept. 2, the body of Ben Freeman was laid to rest in Fairmount cemetery. Ben was a son of the late D.M. Freeman, was about 14 years old and came to his death Sunday by drowning in Illinois River.

{from The Siloam Daily Register} Ben Freeman, the fourteen-year-old son of D.M. Freeman, {who died a few days ago} was drowned in the Illinois river Sunday about 11:30 while boat riding. He was in the boat with Jake Freeman, a brother, and Sim Freeman, a cousin. The boat dipped and young Freeman, fearing it was going over, jumped from the boat in fifteen feet of water. He could not swim and his companions were unable to rescue him. The news soon spread and there were at least 200 people along the banks of the river when the body was recovered at three p.m. The drowning took place at the old Daniels ford. The family reside 3 1/2 miles east of town. The funeral of the young man was yesterday at 10:30 at Fairmount cemetery.
