William C. Sloan Jr., 76, of Jonesboro died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at St. Bernards Medical Center. He was a member of a pioneer family of Northeast Arkansas.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, LaVerne Scott SLOAN of the home; a son, William C. Sloan III of Jonesboro; a daughter, Phoebe SLOAN Crocker and her husband Don; a granddaughter, Katie Crocker, all of Little Rock; a brother, Frank F. Sloan of Jonesboro; and two sisters, Barbara SLOAN Pearsall of Austin, Texas, and Betsy Sloan Barrett of Jonesboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William C. Sloan Sr. and Elizabeth Fuller Sloan.

A native of Jonesboro, Mr. SLOAN was active in Boy Scouting, having earned 42 merit badges, twice the number required to become an Eagle Scout. He graduated from McCallie Military Academy, Chattanooga, Tenn.; attended Vanderbilt University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma; and was a graduate of Arkansas State University.

Mr. Sloan had been a prominent farmer in the Fontaine area, was a part-owner of the Fontaine Gin, and later owned and operated Sloan Cattle Farms, now the location of Sage Meadows.

He had served as a board member of the Production Credit Association, the board of First National Bank of Jonesboro, was a member of the Jonesboro Rotary Club and the Elks Club, and was a lifetime member and a deacon of First Presbyterian Church of Jonesboro. Mr. Sloan was an Eagle Scout.

Mr. Sloan was a U.S. Army veteran, having served a year in Korea during the Korean War. He was an avid golfer, a good family man, a loving husband and father and a doting grandfather.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, with Dr. David Shaller and the Rev. Patty Shaller officiating.

Persons wishing to leave lasting memorials may consider First Presbyterian Church, the Salvation Army or a charity of their choice.
