Born in Newberry District SC to Jacob Counts and Martha Mills. Moved to Calhoun County MS and married Rebecca Dickey (buried in Mount Liberty Cemetery, Calhoun County, MS). After his wife's death he moved to live with his daughter Mary Mauldin (George) and later to Plainview, Yell County, AR to live with daughter Lucinda Barton (John). He was the father of: John M., William, Elijah, Georginnia, Mary (Mauldin), Martha (Howell), Lucinda (Barton), Permelia (Gay) and Emily. Mr. Counts was a private in Company K, of the 3rd regiment. His Captain was W.G. Turner. His Colonel was Col. William J. Owens. Company K was raised in Pittsboro, Calhoun County June 14, 1862. The term of enlistment was 6 months. These were primarily men in the companies of militia, that every county had. Company K had 69 men. The regiment itself was organized Aug. 7,1862. It was for state service, so it was not mustered into Confederate service, though it could be commanded by Confederate officers. I don't know exactly what they did, but I suspect they may have been a garrison, or something like that. They were stationed at Grenada, Miss. in Feb. 1863, which was about the end of their enlistment. The regiment was disbanded, some of the men went into cavalry service.
For years his family thought he was buried in Missisippi or Oklahoma, but his great-grandaughter discovered his Arkansas death certificate and his actual burial location was discovered. His descendants respectfully and lovingly placed the Veterans stone on his grave on May 31, 2008.
