William 'Bill' WEATHERBY

Weatherby Family Cemetery
Madison County,
Arkansas

William 'Bill' Weatherby, born 6 January 1872 died December 1957. Bill Weatherby is buried on the old Weatherby homestead about 5 miles south of Pettigrew, just a short distance from the Johnson County line. There are a total of four graves at this location: Armilda Sisemore, wife of Bill; Sarah and an infant daughter, both children of Bill & Armilda. At age 85, Bill Weatherby had traveled by bus from Arkansas to Louisiana, Missouri, to visit his son, Henry, in Pike County, Missouri. When he got off of the bus, he was sick and confused. The police picked him up, thinking he was drunk, and he spent the night in jail. The next morning Bill was released but he was still confused and instead of going south to his son's house, he walked across the Mississippi River bridge into Illinois. He talked to a lady there and told her he was going to rest. This lady was the last person to see him alive. Several months later his body was found in a cornfield where he had evidently laid down to rest. Foul play was not suspected since his wallet was still in his pocket. His remains were returned to this location and buried beside his wife and two daughters. His death certificate shows that he had been lost for five months and his body was found on 15 November 1957...so actually he died before the December date on his tombstone.
