ALDEN, Philo - A wave of sorrow passed over many hearts when it was known that Dr. Alden was dead. For two weeks it was known that he was stricken with a fatal malady but we hoped against hope that death would stay his hand and he would be spared to us yet awhile but the summons came swiftly and on the afternoon of September 12, 1913 his spirit returned to God who gave it. Dr. Alden was born in Bosier Parish, La. January 29, 1848, came to Benton county, Ark. in 1869; was married to Miss Ida McAndrew in 1875 and about that time he began the practice of medicine in the community in which he died. Most of his manhood years were spent in the Osage valley in Benton county, here he built his home and came and went among us, true to his duties as a physician, citizen, neighbor and friend. Dr. Alden was a man of affairs, with a keen discernment of men, a broad scope of intelligence, a fine mental balance, and had he chosen to have entered the arena of finance or politics he would have made his mark, but he chose rather to devote his talents to his profession and the building up of the community in which he lived. Who can estimate the worth of the country doctor? He travels over countless miles, in winter's cold and summer's heat, through night and storm, often weary, often burdened with care for his patients. Taking no thought for himself, he goes on day by day, relieving pain and disease and cheering the anxious hearts of many. Surely when the "Books are opened" his name will be found therein. In his private life Dr. Alden exemplified the best type of citizenship, stainless integrity, lofty purpose, patriotic and zealous for the best good of the country. He has left to his family a heritage richer than silver or gold - the example of a life well spent. He guided well his household and his home was a haven of peace to all its members. A number of years ago he confessed Christ as his personal Savior and when the chill waters of death drew near he was undismayed. Darker than the gathering shades of death was the anguish of his wife and children when the summons came, but all the promises of God's word are "yea and Amen" in Christ Jesus and trusting in the Father's infinite wisdom they can safely rest in His everlasting love. Dr. Alden's voice is hushed in death: his useful life on earth is done, but his memory is a sacred possession which the years can never change or take away. M.F.N.

Dr. Philo Alden, eighth generation from John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, was born Jan. 26, 1848 in Bossier Parish, La., lived there until 1867 when he, with his mother, brother and two sisters came to Benton county. He was entirely dependent upon his own efforts for his support; he farmed one year with his brother, taught school two or three terms, was druggist for Dr. Taliaferro for a while, then took up the study of medicine, so was a very successful, kind and useful physician. He was a very kind and generous citizen and neighbor. He leaves a loving wife, three daughters, one son, two sisters and an innumerable host of friends to deplore his (as it seems) untimely demise. His place in the home, in the community and all things pertaining to the betterment of the country, the uplift of humanity, cannot be estimated. He was an advocate and worker in all progressive movements; he was one among the best of husbands, fathers and I do not hesitate to say, brothers, as I, his loving sister, can in all candor say; he seemed as near perfect as man gets to be here on earth. He was reconciled to the Lord's will on the 12th of Sept. 1913. R.J.M.
