The Baxter Bulletin
August 31, 1923:
CHILD DIES NEAR NORFORK
Six Year Old Daughter of John Lackey is Victim.

The six year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lackey, three miles east of Norfork, which received very severe burns at their home on Wednesday of last week, died the following Thursday night, after several hours of intense agony and suffering.

The accident happened at about the noon hour while the mother was cooking. Mrs. Lackey had left the house to get a bucket of water. The little girl was in the kitchen alone and had stepped upon a large lard can near the stove to get something on the shelf and in doing so her dress was sucked into the fire, all her clothing being in flames in a very short time. Her father was in another part of the house, and hearing her screams, ran to her. He extinguished the flames and removed her clothing as soon as possible, but the burns had inflicted such injuries that the child went into unconsciousness and convulsions and died as stated.

(Note: The gravestone has a death date of August 31, 1923, but based upon the newspaper story, it appears the actual death date was August 23, 1923.)
