Jimmy Wicoff died in an early morning fire Sunday when his house was gutted by a fire that was believed to have started in a hot water heater or stove.
Wicoff's wife, Elsie, and 10 year-old son, Johnny escaped the infreno, but the senior Wicoff was apparently overcome by smoke and died of asphyxiation. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Baxter General Hospital after Bryan Dickerson of Norfork Fire Department pulled him from a front bedroom. Other members of the fire department administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in an attempt to revive him. Mrs. Wicoff was treated for minor burns and dismissed.
The fire in the six-room frame house was reported about 3:15AM Sunday and when the firemen arrived the house was engulfed in flames, according to Andy Simpson of Norfork Fire Department. A truck from Mt. Home along with the rescue unit also arrived at the scene about an hour later and firemen stayed at the scene until about 9 Sunday morning. The house and contents were a total loss, according to Simpson, with minor damage being sustained to the Chruch of Christ building next to the house.
Two Norfork firemen were reported injured fighting the fire. Max Rose sustained a broken foot and was treated at Baxter General and dismissed and Leo Rose received a shoulder injury, but was not admitted, according to Simpson.
Clothing donations for Mrs. Wicoff and two sons are being taken at the Simpson's Service Station in Norfork and at the fire station. the Wicoff's 19-year-old son, who was at Fort Leonard Wood, MO at the time of the blaze lost most of his clothing, wears a size nine shoe, 15 1/2 shirt and 31 waist in pants. Their 10-year-old wears a size 5 shoe, size nine shirt and size nine pants. Mrs. Wicoff wears a size seven shoe and size eight or nine dresses.
Funeral srevices for Jimmy Lane Wicoff, Sr, were held Wednesday at the Norfork First Baptist Chruch with a military burial service following at the Galatia Cemetery.
Wicoff worked as a butcher at Webb's Supermarket in Calico Rock. He was a veteran of World War II and Korea. Wicoff was a member of the Norfork Batist Church, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Wicoff was born Oct 15, 1923, at Holcomb, MO, the son of Jacob Lewis and Martha Lou Smith Wicoff. He is survived by his parens; his wife, Elsie Dickerson Wicoff; three sons, Phillip Wicoff of Holcomb, Johnny Ray Wicoff of Norfork and Jimmy L. Wicoff, Jr. stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO; two daughters, Wava Sisk of Norfork and Phyllis Clark of Holcomb; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Gene Alexander, Olgie Sisk, Virgil Wilbur, James Wilbur, Harold Parnell, and Roy Killian. Honorary pallbearers were Ross Alexander, Thurlo Sisk, Willie Parnell, Wayne Hager and Tom Watson.
Rev. Gearge Fletcher conducted the services under the direction of the Roller Funeral Home.
